Flapjack Octopus
How is this little octopus related to pancakes🥞?
......A.k.a. Pancake Devilfish. (Dumbo Octopus actually refers to a different species)The Flapjack Octopus is a cute little octopus living in the deep sea, with a flat, orange body that looks like a delicious pancake.
When the Flapjack Octopus swims gracefully, it resembles a small parachute—elegant and cute! They truly are the umbrellas of the deep sea.
The Flapjack Octopus has two ear-like fins on its head. And like other octopuses, they have eight flexible tentacles.
When in danger, the Flapjack Octopus will quickly flap the fins on its head to propel itself until it is safely away from the threat.
It's worth noting that although Flapjack Octopus are also octopuses, they don't have ink sacs and can't squirt out ink to protect themselves like other octopuses. While this makes them more vulnerable in some ways, it also contributes to their unique survival strategies.
However, this little cutie is quite hard to spot! Unlike other octopuses, they are challenging to keep, and the chances of seeing a Flapjack Octopus are very rare, making them a true treasure of the ocean. Many marine enthusiasts and researchers would like to observe this fascinating little octopus, but often they can only get a glimpse of them in specialized aquariums or specific areas of the sea. To catch a glimpse of this little star, you'll need to keep an eye on aquarium updates.
Interestingly enough, is the Flapjack Octopus edible? Is it as delicious as a pancake? Does it have a texture similar to that of octopus tentacles? It is said that their flavor is the same as seawater, perhaps due to their deep-sea habitat!
